"Some mothers may never require anything to
apply to their nipples, some may need something light for
soothing, others,
may be in so much pain, that they may need the right cream or
ointment to make the difference
between continuing
breast feeding or stopping all together."
Deciding to breast feed doesn't mean
you'll have to have some sort of a nipple cream on hand at all
times, but dried and cracked nipples can cause much pain for mothers
and in turn affect the baby's feeding. Occasionally cracked nipple tissue may become infected.
It may show itself with redness, oozing, heat in the area,
fever and pain or maybe just the cracked nipples.
When something strong is
needed, some physicians prescribe a doctor formulated compound
called "All Purpose Nipple Ointment" (APNO). Dr. Jack
Newman, from Canada's Children's Hospital, has created this
compounded ointment formula and it is made of an
antibacterial, an antifungal and a steroid.
Of course, we would prepare any other
formula your physician may deem more appropriate for your specific
condition.
